Rock is what ultimately moves me the most. For a long time I didn't listen to anything other than rock and top40, but I can now appreciate rap, soul, jazz, classical and even some world music too, which I never thought possible.
I taught myself to play guitar, with guidance here and there from my friends. I'm a pretty good singer, but I don't take it very seriously... just seriously enough not to do it publicly. I can mess around on a bass, piano and keyboard, and I can mess around pretty effectively on the drums, but I wouldn't brag about many of them due to lack of practice time.
I did try to teach myself the fiddle as a child. Click to find out what happened.

I have a terribly biased opinion and am extremely close minded. I use my personal tastes in an attempt to dissuade listeners from making their own judgments about experimental music. I forget that critical analysis should not be taken too heart, since music is afterall, in the ear of the beholder. I often condemn artists and am irritated by their success even when they are not seeking such critical acclaim. Perhaps I do not consider that some acts exist simply to express their love of music and their need to produce personal works in order to achieve self-satisfaction. I scoff at artists who attempt to shine a new light on music when the popular music scene of today is ho-hum to say the least.

There's great stuff in here, like MarvinGaye and SamCooke. Then there's EarthWindAndFire ballads. Barf.

The Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman eras were fine, but I prefer Parker and Coltrane. Miles is brilliant, but too composed.

There's a lot of good stuff out there. I like African beats. Samba is infectious.
